About Workplace

Workplace is a dedicated and secure working space for organizations to connect, communicate and collaborate. Organizations of all sizes can use familiar Facebook features like News Feed, groups, messages and events to get things done.

  • Companies find that they can eliminate or drastically reduce their need for internal collaboration tools such as their intranet, telephony systems, video conferencing and distribution lists. The recent Total Economic Impact study of Workplace conducted by Forrester Consulting shows that companies using Workplace can achieve a 25% reduction in leadership communication costs
  • Workplace does more than just simplify communications - it inspires all levels of the company to embrace digital and mobile, and adopt a culture of speed and transparency.
  • In addition, Workplace is easy to use because it's based on familiar Facebook features like News Feed, groups and messages. There's no training required.
  • We have more than 30,000 companies around the globe using Workplace.
  • These companies span multiple industries - retail, technology, telecommunications, financial services, media, entertainment, hospitality, food & beverage, transportation, real estate, utilities, shipping and government.

You can sign up at workplace.com.

  • You don't need a personal Facebook account to sign up for Workplace and there are separate websites and apps for both.

The pricing model is based on the number of people using Workplace per month. We also have the Workplace Essential plan that is free of charge. For full details visit workplace.com/workplace/pricing.

Certain organizations have specific requirements for work tools. Features like single sign-on (SSO), secure identity management, enterprise support and analytics are included in Workplace Advanced and Enterprise. These plans also allow an organization to export its data and manage its Workplace in ways that are not available on Facebook or Workplace Essential.

  • Product features: The free Essential plan has all the features you'd expect like News Feed, groups, chat, live video, integrations with 3rd party tools and some admin features. The paid Advanced and Enterprise plans have extra admin features like integrations with identity providers. Customers on paid plans have access to integration APIs for bots, account management, e-discovery and policy enforcement. These integrations can be custom built or enabled through our partner ecosystem.
  • Content: For all plans, content is reviewed by admins.

If you're using Workplace Essential, Advanced or Enterprise, your company owns the information and data your employees create in your Workplace. Facebook acts as the data processor.

If you're using Workplace Standard, you own the information and data your employees create, although Facebook's Community Standards apply, and Facebook acts as the data controller and is responsible for the processing of users' data.

If an organization is using Workplace Essential, Advanced or Enterprise, after an employee leaves, the admin will still have access to their Workplace profile.

If an organization is using Workplace Standard, employees have the option to delete or deactivate their account at any time.

You can deactivate your account at any time. But if you're using Workplace Essential, Advanced or Enterprise, your organization will have continued access to your Workplace profile.

Product Plans and Pricing

Workplace Product Plans and Pricing

The new plans and pricing will help organizations choose the product capabilities they need, better predict costs and better connect their frontline employees with the rest of the business.

Workplace Essential is built to improve team collaboration and communication. It contains familiar Workplace features like Groups, Workplace Chat, News Feed and Live video. Workplace Essential is free to use and will gradually replace Workplace Standard as our free package.

Workplace Advanced is built for connecting an entire organization on Workplace. It contains familiar Workplace features like Chat, Live video and Groups, plus admin controls. Workplace Advanced costs USD $4.00 per person, per month. With Workplace Advanced, frontline employees can be connected to Workplace Frontline on mobile for USD $1.50 per person, per month.

Workplace Enterprise is for organizations that operate with greater levels of complexity, due to their size or industry, and need a higher level of support. It includes all of the features in the Advanced plan, plus a 4-hour initial support response time SLA, priority support resolution and early access to new features. Workplace Enterprise costs USD $8.00 per person, per month.

The Frontline feature makes it easier to manage how your frontline staff access Workplace. It lets admins assign people in your organization as frontline workers. Admins can then add a custom message and terms to appear whenever these frontline workers use Workplace, like "You won't be paid overtime for using Workplace outside office hours". Frontline workers are charged at a discounted rate of USD $1.50 per person, per month. Admins can also disable group creation for frontline workers.

The Frontline feature is available in the Workplace Advanced and Enterprise plans. In Advanced, frontline workers can only access Workplace on mobile. In Enterprise, you can decide whegther to allow access on both mobile and web, or limit it to mobile only.

Frontline workers are people whose primary role is working directly with customers or the general public, providing services, support and selling products, or employees directly involved in the manufacturing and distribution of products.

To qualify as a frontline worker on Workplace, an employee must fall into one or more of these buckets:

  • Employee is away from a desk 50% of the time or more
  • Employee is paid hourly
  • Employee does not have a work email address

AND employee matches one of these role descriptions:

  • Customer-facing worker (sales floor, receptionist, associate, hospitality worker, air steward, etc.) at any level, including management
  • Backstage worker (warehouse, courier, etc.) at any level, including management
  • Utilities or public service worker (police officer, waste management, electrical line repair, water supply) at any level, including management
  • Medical care staff (nursing, doctor, facilities) at any level, including management

No. The Frontline feature can only be used as an add-on to Workplace Advanced or Workplace Enterprise.

Frontline workers are charged at USD $1.50 per person, per month, rather than USD $4.00 on Workplace Advanced or USD 8.00 on Workplace Enterprise.

You can add frontline workers via the Frontline menu in the Admin Panel.

Workplace Advanced and Enterprise have replaced Workplace Premium for new customers since September 2, 2019. Workplace Essential is currently being rolled out.

Workplace Essential, Advanced and Enterprise can be used on the web, on iOS and Android mobile apps and via a mobile web browser.

In Workplace Advanced the Frontline feature is only available on iOS and Android mobile apps and via a mobile web browser only.

In Workplace Enterprise the Frontline feature is available on the web, iOS and Android mobile apps and via a mobile web browser.

On Workplace Advanced and Enterprise, you pay for the number of people who have been invited to activate their Workplace profile. You can create an unlimited number of profiles in your Workplace. But only when a person is invited to activate their profile do they become billable.

Workplace admins can control how many people are invited to activate their Workplace profile and can therefore control and predict how much Workplace will cost each month.

Existing customers will continue to pay USD $3.00 per monthly active user until September 30, 2020. Starting from October 1, 2020, the effect of the new list prices will depend on two factors.

The first factor is the number of people who will move on to the Frontline feature. For example, a high number of users on the Frontline feature may decrease the overall cost as they will be charged at only USD $1.50 per person, per month.

The second factor is the number of people who have been invited to activate their Workplace profile (as this will be the new way of calculating the number of billable people). For example, if you have invited a large number of people to activate their profiles but you only have a low number of monthly active users, the total cost of Workplace will increase. To minimise the increase, system admins can deactivate inactive profiles in the Admin Panel at any time.

Once Workplace Essential becomes available, existing Workplace Standard communities will be migrated to Workplace Essential.

We will email Workplace system admins to explain what this update means for them.

If you purchased Workplace through a Workplace reseller partner, please contact them for more information about how this will affect your Workplace.

We will email Workplace system admins to explain what this update means for them.

Existing Workplace Premium customers will be migrated to Workplace Advanced. If you're interested in Workplace Enterprise, please contact the Workplace team or a Workplace reseller partner.

You can deactivate their profiles in the Admin Panel. Please follow the instructions in our Help Centre article.

Workplace has a subscription-based model and you can cancel your account at any time by contacting Workplace support. You'll need to notify us of the cancellation 30 days in advance. You can also consider switching to Workplace Essential, which is the free version of Workplace.

No data will be deleted from existing Workplace profiles. But only Advanced and Enterprise customers will have access to APIs to extract data from Workplace.

From transport layer protocols to machine learning for threat detection, Facebook's network is protected by a combination of advanced automated systems, best-in-class encryption standards and dedicated security teams.

The security of our service is regularly evaluated and tested by our own internal security experts and independent third parties, including full source code reviews and penetration tests. We happily share these reports and results with Workplace Advanced and Enterprise customers upon request.

That's why we give Workplace Advanced and Enterprise customers the ability to manage their Workplace security settings and policies. Advanced and Enterprise customers can use APIs to monitor activity for policy enforcement and receive alerts. If you would prefer to use a 3rd-party e-discovery and compliance tool, we offer integrations with several industry-leading providers.

Physical access to Facebook data centers and offices is restricted to authorized individuals. We own or directly lease all our facilities so we have end-to-end control over the grounds, the buildings, the servers, the operations and maintenance for each center.
